New Ideas : Town of West Warwick

Get rid of the Town Council. We need to elect a Mayor!

1

Vote On Idea

This town is lacking in many ways. Are schools are degrading. Streets are littered with trash. New projects aren't being completed due to lack of funds from losses and when they are completed they are poorly supervised and start to degrade. Taxes are more. I could go on. No one has encouragement to stay here. The town council takes to long to come to a decision or compromise. When they actually do something, it's costly, managed poorly, and results are mediocre. The town council and town managers are all for themselves.

I say lets have a mayor elected. That alone would free up some money between removing the town manager/town council members.

West Warwick used to be one of the best towns in RI. With a booming economy rivaling others. We can have that again but we need to utilize newer technologies and be innovative. We need to take care of our own. West Warwick needs to help ourselves first and start serving Warwick/Coventry/East Greenwich second instead of first.

We need someone with youth and energy. Smarts, ideas, and a strong will to clean up this town and fix it.

Idea to Save Money

1

Vote On Idea

This may be a bit contraversial and cause a bit of a furor, but what if some of the schools in West Warwick were consolidated? I remember a statistic someone brought up at one of last year's school budget meetings, where 80% of trhe people in WW do NOT have childeren attending WW schools. Was this statement correct? If so, why not close some schools, and expand bussing. I understand the teacher situatiuon needs to be addressed as well, but I do not know all of the mechanisms in place for forced retirements/retirements/pension, etc. I would love to attend upcoming school board meetings to listen to discussions and ideas.
Obtaining capitol when there are periods of critical shortages

1

Vote On Idea

Often towns reach periods whereby money becomes very tight. Towns can float bonds and pay interest on those that come due, or borrow from some type of insttution.

Town residents should be afforded a "discount" for paying taxes for future dates ---- lets say a couple years in the fuure. The town could guarantee the property owner that his or her taxes stay at those current existing rates for future payments that the property owner makes today. If the future years tax rate went down, he or she would get the difference refunded or rolled back in as a credit to the taxpayer. I think it would be advantageous to both parties.

Additionally, if the property owner wanted to sell his or her house during that period, it would be a selling point to the prospective buyer that he or she would not have to worry about paying taxes for the period covered and add value to the property.

It would have to be written into the towns laws that the contract is binding to give the property owner assurances that it could not be repealed.

Comments (0)Creative Funding

Cost Savings

2

Vote On Idea

One way for the town to save money would be through having volunteer fireman on our force to work with the full time fireman. Rhode Island has the highest rate per person for fire spending. Other towns use volunteer firemen in their districts why don't we? We would be eliminating pensions, pay, and health coverage.

Another way to look into saving money would be to look at a third party to do garbage disposal. Compare costs of keeping up equipment, pay, pensions, health coverage ect... to what it would cost to either have a third party do it or have a waste center where people can drop off their garbage.

These ideas would hopefully save the tax payers money and hopefully lower taxes in the town and make it more appealing for people to move here.

Comments (0)Cost Cutting

West Warwick needs to come up with better ways to save the tax payers of West Warwick money. We have one of the highest tax rates in the state and it is not getting any better. Whether it be by consolidating services with other towns or within our own district something needs to be done. We spend 46 million on schools and 30 million on municipal services. Taxes in the town need to stabilize by sharing services with other districts or cutting cost through layoffs or attrition. How many years are our taxes going to go up with out looking outside the box for answers? I don't want people to get layed off I would rather people retire and not replace them.

Why doesn't West Warwick try the no bin no pick up policy that is being implemented in may areas of the State the goal is higher recycling compliance beleive after one or two times the trash is not picked they will recycle properly and this will also save on tipping fees at the landfill.saving the town money.

i have offer to produce a monument for the station fire with a new method and extreemly cost effective i offer to produce each victim a jet black laser engraved monument of thier own and maby two larger ones for all of the first responders i am willing to produce the entire memorial for time and materials each of the onehunderd monuments would be 2foot by 1 foot by eight inches thick all polished for roughly 300 dollars each each to include a laser engraved picture and lettering as you can see the monument would be cost effective and maintence free asside from power wash every few years i am also willing to help with a fund rasier of engraved bricks to defer the costs

From what I have read, recyclables cost the town $0 to bring to the landfill, compared to the substantial amount charged for general garbage. This town could focus on the importance of collecting cost-effective recyclable trash, for example pick up more frequently than general garbage. Also, recycle bins provided are not large enough.
